Twilight
First of all, let me get something out: I don't like Twilight. At all. I think it's stupid, I think it's boring, I think it's not well written at all.
Having said that, I'm going to take a poll. Because I'm really interested in this sort of stuff. Please answer honestly.
1) How do you feel about Twilight? Have you read the books? What does it make you feel?
2) Twilight fandom vs Harry Potter fandom -- your thoughts?
3) If you were ever given the chance, would you ban Twilight? Why or why not?
Two quotes to keep you thinking (the first one upsets me):
Novelist Orson Scott Card said that Stephenie Meyer "writes with luminous clarity, never standing between the reader and the dream they share. She's the real thing." Scott also went on to describe Meyer as an "amazing phenomenon." (HOW UPSETTING IS THAT, FOR SERIOUS?!)
Jodi Picoult said, "Stephenie Meyer has gotten people hooked on books, and that's good for all of us."

1) Haven't read them. Love to hate them.
2) Twilight has a huge following, but Harry Potter reaches out to people of all ages and of both genders. It's bigger.
3) I wouldn't ban it. It's free speech.
Orson Scott Card said that? I want to cry, because OSC is one of my favorite authors ever. Ever.
"Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."

1) I hate Twilight. I hate Twilight. I hate Twilight. I hate Twilight. I have no read them and don't plan to.
2) I really don't like either of them to be honest. I mean anyone who gets that obsessed about anything really just needs to take a break. By the way I'm not talking about the books here but the fandom.
3) Tough one. The liberal in my says free speech. The annoyed teenage boy in me says hells yeah.

Re: Twilight
1. No plans on reading them. Dislike them.
2. Fandoms ruin stuff. They kill the enjoyment in the casual reader. I don't give a shit about Harry Potter fandom either, yes, I want to read Rowling's Encyclopedia, but I'm not like: "OMFG! Harry Potter is so going to marry Ginny and they are going to have kids. OMG we should write a fan novel based on their lives"
3. Banning books blinds people

I would also like to note that I am not a fan of fandom.

OSC is an idiot. Fantastic writer, but an idiot. I've seen him say some pretty stupid stuff before.

Re: Twilight
I haven't read them and do not plan to, so I don't really have any worthwhile opinion on the other parts of this. I don't understand how you can hate something you haven't read.
I did see the first movie, along with a rifftrax, and it was a good base for riffing but not a good movie. Then again, some people I know how like the book did not like the movie, so it could be meaningless.

See, I've tried to read them. I tried to read the first book to see what all the fuss was about. And... I couldn't. I couldn't stand the writing style, Bella is a total Mary Sue, and... like, seriously? She's too perfect, even though she's supposed to be, like, "Hiii I'm a NORMAL TEENAGE GIRL plzthnx." And then she becomes even more perfect after she becomes a vampire. I mean, I know she's clumsy for the first three books, but when she becomes a vampire the reader loses any sort of connection they had to Bella, because now she's totally not like them at all.
I do like fandoms, I will not lie. I'm a shipper, but I'm not so extreme that I write R/Hr fanfiction. It's like a nice community full of people who like the same sort of stuff you do, and it's pretty cool to just randomly strike up a conversation with someone based on Harry Potter or Torchwood or something. The thing is, though, that
a) fandom works best when it's across ages/genders
b) YOU MUST REMEMBER IT DOESN'T REALLY EXIST.
Okay, seriously, girls dump their boyfriends because they want someone "more like Edward." Edward is a complete jerk. He's overly Byronic, he's a stalker, he's overprotective, and he's not even really that nice. Yet girls are OBSESSED WITH HIM. Can't say much about Jacob (werewolf boy) but he sounds far more sympathetic than Mr Sparkly Vampire. But people treat Twilight/Edward as if he is God, which he is not. Nor is the franchise really worth it. Honestly, Twilight fangirls scare the crap out of me. I just don't understand the appeal at all. (Then again, I have sort of had my own personal experience with somebody who followed me around, and that made me feel uncomfortable... which is why I wouldn't go for Edward. But I've hated the books since before any of that happened!)
I love free speech. And, if I had the power, I would... not ban Twilight, because book banning is disturbing, but probably deter people from reading it. Not because I think it's too sexual or anything, but because they're poorly written, they don't really have a plot, and they don't exactly set the best example for teenage girls (hey, let's get married when you're eighteen! and have a demon baby! and name it Renesmee, which is even worse than Albus Severus!).
Nevertheless, I feel like I have to grudgingly give credit to SMeyer... because if people stop reading books then my dreams of being an author die on the spot. At least she's made people, especially teenage girls, drop their phones and start reading. No matter how absolutely mind-numbingly bad it is, they're reading. I've got to be thankful for that, yeah?

Re: Twilight
you ruined it! bella becomes a vampire?!!
on the other hand, it totally ruined all the credibility that vampires used to have. Notions of vlad the impaler and dracula and count dooku, the elegant creatures who are actually not very nice, are replaced by a dumb book for girls, that has nothing to do with anything that is good. And every knows you don't mess with dooku, b/c he won't be happy when he finds out...
