Hey! A Topic!
Welcome to 'Hey! A Topic' commonly called HAT, where I bring up a topic, and over the course of several days somewhere between 0 and 3 other people view the topic, possibly commenting, or not, as they choose.
Today's HAT is this: Senator Barack Obama's announcement that he's running for President in 2008!
"All of us know what those challenges are today - a war with no end, a dependence on oil that threatens our future, schools where too many children aren't learning, and families struggling paycheck to paycheck despite working as hard as they can. We know the challenges. We've heard them. We've talked about them for years.
What's stopped us from meeting these challenges is not the absence of sound policies and sensible plans. What's stopped us is the failure of leadership, the smallness of our politics - the ease with which we're distracted by the petty and trivial, our chronic avoidance of tough decisions, our preference for scoring cheap political points instead of rolling up our sleeves and building a working consensus to tackle big problems.
For the last six years we've been told that our mounting debts don't matter, we've been told that the anxiety Americans feel about rising health care costs and stagnant wages are an illusion, we've been told that climate change is a hoax, and that tough talk and an ill-conceived war can replace diplomacy, and strategy, and foresight. [...]
Today we grieve for the families who have lost loved ones, the hearts that have been broken, and the young lives that could have been. America, it's time to start bringing our troops home. It's time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else's civil war."
I hope he's successful in achieving the Democratic nomination for President in 2008, and then wins the general election. Otherwise, we'll have to continue living with the delusion that we can resolve other people's civil wars, face massive debt crises that White House budget plans fail to address, a dependence on foreign oil, rising health care costs, a mediocre school system, and a rough economy on the middle class.
I agree that those are big problems, so I'm officially declaring my support for Senator Obama in 2008! So what do you guys think? Are you glad Obama threw his HAT in the ring? (LOL get it? Because it's 'Hey! A Topic!')
