For the college-bound among the forum:
1) When is/was your orientation? Mine was last week and it was freakin' amazing. Also, what sort of stuff do/did you get to do (if you have any ideas about what will happen).
2) What classes are you taking? I'm taking:
Basic Astronomy (ridiculously excited for this)
Enjoyment of Theatre
Brit Lit II (because Brit Lit I was all full)
Honours course about the Criminal Justice System in America
Honours course about World Literature to 1700 (oh boy, Odyssey/Inferno all over again eh?)
Aaannnddd a gen ed introductory course, but since I'm in the honours version I get to pick a section and mine is SCIENCE AND RELIGION which should make for some hellishly interesting debates ^_^
SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!

Orientations and College-y things Empty Re: Orientations and College-y things

I just came back from mine yesterday and was actually going to start a thread, so YAY Alex! Basically, I'm a History major trying to become a teacher which is apparently the most cramped schedule ever. Basically, I will always have 17 hours each semester, I have no electives, BUT on the bright side I will only take five courses throughout college that are not History, Education, or Social Studies related.

Basically:
-Sociology (5 hours a week!)
-Anthropology (this is my Life Science Requirement)
-Communications I (this is my English as I tested out of Comp, but didn't get any credit for it, which in my case is completely useless)
-Statistics (this is my Quantative Reasoning Course, the other will be Sociological Research Methods which I will take in the Spring)
-Early European History

I might be taking one more course, its a Social Studies if I am. So downsides: I got little to no choice in what courses I took, they are all required of my major. I also can have no electives meaning that I will mean: after Statistics I will never have a Math, Science, or Literature Sad course again Sad.
Upsides: All History, all the time. No labs! No Chemistry! And no Calculus! Plus, all my classes are on the Quad which is two blocks from my dorms so I can walk to all my classes.

Note: History Majors don't have what I have ONLY History Majors with the Education Requirement, which will mean I will take Educational Psychology, Educational Policy, Student Teach for a semester, and 50 hours of tutoring by February 1st, 2011.

Do you want to teach high school or college? Because that's what I'm actually looking into doing with the rest of my life.

So glad I am not teaching. It's all everybody ever asks me. "What are you majoring in?" "English." "So you're gonna teach?" ARGHHHHHH NOOO I WILL NEVER TEACH I HAVE NO PATIENCE TO TEACH!!!!

Ahem.

I also get straight into my English courses because I don't have to take English 101, English 102 or English 105 (which is like honours English) because I pwned AP Lang enough to get out of those. So I'm starting with a 300-level course <3 SO EXCITED!!!

I'm going to have to take English 101 wherever I go because I chickened out of AP Lang. Hopefully I'll never have to take general ed history though because of AP US and AP Gov.

I don't get any credit (technically speaking) for AP US because American History isn't a gen ed. However, if I score well enough on AP Euro and AP Gov, then I get to bypass soc gen eds =]

Teaching requires Psych, which most schools want a 9 for. English teachers get electives, Social Studies don't Sad . Dohn, depending on your college it might be different. High School is what I want to teach.

I'm probably going to end up taking a crapload of creative writing courses and hopefully in the future I'll get to go to graduate school somewhere good -- if I'm smart enough. I need to learn a lot.
