Ok, in MOST major schools, you need 4 credits of foreign language from high school to not have to take a foreign language if you are going into a Liberal Arts and Sciences Program. So basically:
Honors: 1R, 2A, 3A
which is equal in material to:
Regents: 1R, 2R, 3R, Comprehensive
BUT, the Regents will get you off having to take a language, Honors will not. Therefore, we are almost all screwed into taking languages again for THREE SEMESTERS.

Unless you can test out of Level 4 Spanish, which is like AP level...

Declare a major that translates into an actual job (A Bachelor of Science) and you usually don't have to worry about it.

So English, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, etc. don't count as worthy majors?
Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
or you can do 1r,2a,3a,4a,5a

Physics and Biology are worthy majors. The rest are not.
Actually, you could argue Psychology because there's big profit potential in that area.

But aren't you considering majoring in PolySci?
Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
No, I'm considering a major in Public Policy.

I'm an English major. I suppose you're expecting me to starve on the streets? Because that's what everybody else is expecting me to do. Of course, I'll starve less after I publish a book... if enough people really like it...

Yes, Alex, you will probably starve on the street. But it's not as bad for you, you got a nice scholarship and aren't dependent on any student loans. My point applies less to us than it does to others anyway, we're all pretty well off.
You could be the best, most enthusiastic anthropologist in the state but if you're going to a college that charges 30,000+ a year and you're on student loans you can't afford to major in something like that. College is an investment and if you can't profit from it by the time you have kids you're in deep shit.

Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
Yeah... my scholarship was quite nice and UofL definitely isn't that expensive. And I'm really hoping to get this one scholarship so I can go do graduate studies at Cambridge for two years, because that would be so amazing.
But they keep telling us that your major doesn't actually matter that much because you can pretty much do anything you want to. My friend is actually thinking about switching from a BS in bio to doing either bio major/English & religion minor, English major/bio minor, or doing a double major in bio and English and minoring in religion (which sounds insane... because so many kids come to UofL planning to do bio/pre-med). There are eight bio majors on my floor alone. I'm special because I'm a loser who's like, "I'm an English major!" haha

You make a very good point with that Luke. Hmmm, a realist on one of these forums. That's quite odd.
And tell the bio majors that they study too much and need to get lives.

Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
Wow, this is coming from the former History Club forum, I am sad indeed that you are abandoning the importance of history in life
Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
What a horrible way to look at college Luke... or at least in my opinion. The entire world is not about making money and education is not about investing to get a good job. It's about becoming a more well rounded individual. I'm thinking of majoring in Anthropology because I would honestly rather be broke and going to a job I enjoy then rich but hating the reason you're getting up in the morning for the rest of your life.

I just think he's saying that if you want to study a major such as Anthro or History, you should go to a state school (or an equivalent) because there are less jobs available. I don't necessarily agree with him, but it sure does make sense from a financial standpoint.

Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
My point is more what Dohn is saying, don't rely on loans you can't pay off if you're going into a field with low profit potential. There are few things worse in life (as an American) than living with debt hanging over your head, and it's irresponsible to put yourself into that position for an Anthropology or a History major.
If your parents can pay for your degree out of pocket and you don't care too much about having HDTV or the ability to pay for your wife to stay in the hospital for a week after childbirth, then go ahead and follow your passion. But if you have talent in an area with good profit potential, and you want to be better off than your parents are (which is in my opinion a fundamental aspect of the American Dream) go for it. It doesn't have to define your life but there's no shame in valuing financial security.
This is an area where I'll take Nogo's philosophy over Miranda's.

Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
Well I'm not really planning on getting married or having kids so as long as I can have a cat then I'm happy.
I have no idea what I'm going to do for a career but honestly I couldn't be happier studying English, which was my main goal for an education. I could never study something I hated. So even though half my friends are going to become doctors and be rich (after med school, so they all say), I'm quite happy learning about stuff I love.
Also, I can count on one of you to hire me when you start your own businesses and I'm unemployed, yes?

Re: OCD vs. Indifference (or Roommates, Shots, and other things that come in threes)
You see, Casey has a plan.
The assumption that you can only like one thing, though, is the biggest flaw. There's a ton of people, especially at East, that will love a social science or a liberal art of some kind, and also like to a lesser degree a hard science or math, and do extremely well in both. In that case, I say choose the higher pay.
My favorite thing at East was Wind Ensemble and playing my saxophone, but that doesn't mean I didn't also like math, history, social sciences, etc. Your profession doesn't have to be your biggest passion and you don't have to abandon an intellectual pursuit when you choose a major in another area.

Amen to that last sentence.
Um, Alex, you're going to have no debt so you could become a teacher and be the next Ms. Pankow. That would be epic.

I would suck at being a teacher, I really would. I'd get so infuriated easily.
Besides, the world only needs one Pankow. I'd sort of love to be the next Mrs Derrico, if I'm honest about it...

But I learned so much from her! Not that I'm saying I didn't learn a lot from Ms Pankow, but I feel that I became a better writer and thinker in AP Lit with Mrs Derrico.

just because she told you how to write doesn't make her less scary. a witch could teach you how to eat babies. so?

Poignant as always.
I never had either of those teachers... but I found English to be a nuisance anyways, so I doubt that would've helped. I don't feel like I learned anything from English class.
